Fleas & the Diseases They Can Carry

Fleas affect pets in the Moore area.

  • Bubonic Plague

Additionally, prolonged exposure to fleas can make your pet anemic and can cause bites to both humans and other pets in close proximity. There have also been studies that show fleas cause allergic reactions in some individuals.

Different Types of Ticks Found in the Region

There are four different types of ticks in the OK region that covers Norman, Moore, and Newcastle.

  • American Dog Tick: This tick generally seeks out dogs and small animals, but has been known to bite people as well. It is the carrier of Tularemia and the only known transmitter of Rocky Mountain spotted fever in OK.
  • Brown Dog Tick: Here is a tick that can also bite humans, but primarily targets domestic dogs. It is known to be a carrier for Canine Ehrlichiosis and Babesiosis. However, these diseases can carry to people as well. The Brown Dog Tick is also a carrier for Q fever.
  • Lone Star Tick: This tick is active during early spring to late fall and is commonly found along both pathways and trails. Diseases that can be transmitted from this tick include Ehrlichiosis, Tularemia, and Q fever.
  • Blacklegged Tick (AKA...Deer Tick): This species is most prevalent in the OK livestock and wildlife. However, it can still bite humans if in close enough proximity.
